Unwrapping

What is Unwrapping?
Unwrapping is the art of unfolding a 3D object into it’s 2D net. This is useful for texturing models, as the texture can be applied to the 2D net, and then the net can be wrapped around the 3D model. This means that the texture artist doesn’t have to texture on rounded surfaces or around corners.

Paper Box Challenge

In order to gain the theory of how to unwrap a model, we were presented with a series of 3D boxes, and asked to draw their 2D nets. Here are the images of the boxes, followed by their 2D nets, and then the 3D folded boxes.

This is the partially folded net of this final image, as a couple of faces were missing so the net is actually incorrect.
